Durian means "thorny" in Thai, it is covered in spikes, and a single fruit can
be as heavy as a bowling ball!
Columbus discovered not only America, but also the papaya. When he reached the South
American shores, he was greeted by the natives with a feast. The sailors ate too
much after the long journey, and the Indians took them to the rain-forest and offered them
papayas for releasing their pain and it worked! The papaya enzymes support digestion

As well as being the King of Fruits, it is also the most dangerous. If a durian was
to fall from a great height from a tree, the weight and spikes may cause serious harm or

Thailand grows and exports considerably more durian than any other nation, growing 781,000

only been known to the Western World for about 600 years.
It is known as the "King of Fruits" due to its awesome looks and strong odour.
Durian fruit is used to flavour a wide variety of sweet edibles such as traditional Malay
candy, ice kachang, rose biscuits, and, with a touch of modern innovation, ice cream,
milkshakes, moon cakes and even cappuccino.
Due to its characteristic fragrance, durian is banned from many public places in Southeast
Asia such as hotels, buses, and airplanes.
There are several references to the durian in Asian culture, including a Hong Kong film
"Durian Durian", symbolising the subjective nature of ugliness and beauty.
It was the nickname for a character in a Singaporean TV comedy and a comic strip in a
Malaysian newspaper carried the "It's a Durian Life".
A Singapore man was sentenced to more than a year in jail after a bag of durian fruit
dropped from his balcony, nearly killing a building worker below. He was sentenced
to 14 months in jail for acting negligently with the durians and for theft!
The durian is the fruit of trees in the genus Durio. There are 30 recognised Durio
species, all native to Southeast Asia and at least nine of which produce edible fruit.
Writing in 1856, the British naturalist, Alfred Russell Wallace, provided a much-quoted
description of durian flavour: "A rich custard highly flavoured with almonds gives
the best general idea of it, but there are occasional wafts of flavour that call to mind
cream cheese, onion sauce, sherry-wine, and other incongruous dishes. Then there is
a rich glutinous smoothness in the pulp which nothing else possess, but which adds to its
delicacy."
The Malay saying "durian runtuh" which can be translated as "fallen
durian", is used to describe the sudden occurrence of a rare event.
