Vitamin B3 is also known as niacin, nicotinic acid, nicotinamide, niacinamide and
antipellagra vitamin or PP factor.
This is a fast acting vitamin, which is soluble in hot water and alcohol and is not easily
destroyed by light or ordinary cooking temperatures.
Having said that, vitamin B3 is lost in cooking water.
The body is able to manufacture vitamin B3 from the amino acid tryptophane.
The liver is the main storage area for this vitamin and absorption of vitamin B3 takes
place in the intestines.
Vitamin B3 is required by the body for digestive processes, activating enzymes which
nourish the brain, regulating blood pressure and regulating cholesterol levels.
For the production of hormones such as cortisone, insulin, thyroxine and the sex hormones,
vitamin B3 is always required.
Also, vitamin B3 plays a role in the nerves, skin, hair, and the breakdown of fats,
carbohydrates and proteins into energy.
When taking vitamin B3 all the other B complex vitamins should be taken as well.
Some significant food sources that contain Vitamin B3 are sunflower seeds, eggs,
wheatgerm, liver, whole grains, beans and brewers yeast.
Although all the B complex vitamins should be taken together, there are also other
important co-nutrients and these are zinc, manganese, phosphorus and vitamin C.
If you have a diet that is high in corn and corn products (such as cornflour, sweetcorn
and cornmeal) the you will need an increased amount of vitamin B3.
Increased requirements of vitamin B3 are also need if you consume refined sugar or
alcohol.
Certain drugs such as aspirin, oral contraceptives, oestrogens, and sleeping tablets means
that your body needs an increase in the requirement of vitamin B3.
There has been no toxicity reported for vitamin B3, however, if extremely large doses of
this vitamin are taken, then liver function may be affected and depression can occur.
If you are pregnant then you should avoid high doses of vitamin B3.
