Vitamin B Complex - Inositol ...
...Inositol is a
water soluble member of the B
complex vitamins.
Inositol is a water-soluble member of the B complex vitamins and is also known as
lipotropic factor.
This vitamin is found in both plant and animal tissues and in cereals it is present as
phytic acid.
Insositol is phosphorus based.
The bodys intestinal bacteria are able to produce inositol from glucose, however
some of this vitamin may be lost into cooking water.
There are no known toxic effects to this vitamin, however, if you supplement your inositol
primarily from soya lecethin, it would be wise to include plenty of mineral rich foods
within your diet.
High calcium foods or supplements of calcium and magnesium would be wise with a high
intake of this vitamin as lecethins high phosphorus level may upset the bodys
mineral balance.
Also, a major point to note - all the B vitamins should be taken together and never
separately, to prevent deficiency symptoms developing.
The B complex vitamin, Inositol, is required for many different functions within the body
such as fat transport and utilisation, skin and hair health, calming of the nervous
system, liver function and prevention of fatty accumulation in the liver, other organs and
the vascular system.
There are some significant food sources in which this B complex vitamin, inositol, can be
found, such as bananas, citrus fruit, liver and beef heart, soya lecethin, whole grains,
wheatgerm, molasses and brewers yeast.
But, if you drink alcohol, have a large consumption of coffee, are pregnant or are
lactating, then the requirement of this B complex vitamin (inositol) may need to be
increased. Also, if you are taking drugs such
as diuretics, oral contraceptives or oestrogens then again your need for this vitamin may
need to be increased.
