Vitamin C - ascorbic acid ...
...great at protecting our bodies against toxins.
Vitamin C is great at protecting our bodies from lead a harmful substance. It is well documented that lead toxicity is
dangerous, especially to children. Even low
levels of lead can have neurological effects, reduce stature and increase the incidence of
dental caries.
Several studies have suggested that vitamin C may reduce levels of lead in the
blood. Epidemiological studies have shown
people with elevated blood serum levels of vitamin c had lower levels of blood toxicity.
An examination of data (from the Third National Health and Nutrition Examination
Survey by J Simon and E Hudes) which enrolled 4,213 children aged 6-16 and 15,365 adults
aged 17 and over from 1988 to 1994, found a correlation between low serum vitamin C levels
and elevated blood lead levels. These
authors concluded that high vitamin C intake may reduce blood lead levels.
There have been many other studies and analysis conducted on this subject. Another that enrolled 747 men aged between 49 to
93 found that lower dietary intake of Vitamin C may increase the lead levels in blood.
Also the maternal use of a health supplement that includes vitamin C and Vitamin E
might offer some protection from lead contamination of the fetus during pregnancy.
Smoking is known to reduce the levels of vitamin C within the body, and researchers
have theorised that taking a vitamin C health supplement could be beneficial.
Clinical Trial - Vitamin C
and Smoking
A clinical trial was conducted on men aged between 20-30 who smoked at least one
pack of cigarettes per day. They were either
given a placebo, or a vitamin c supplement in the form of ascorbic acid. After only one week there was a decrease of 81% in
the blood-lead levels for those taking the nutritional supplement.
Vitamin C as ascorbic acid also aids our bodies digestive process and many vitamins
are also essential for maintenance of a normal appetite.
Vitamin C regenerates Vitamin E and thus it can potentially inhibit hardening of
the arteries, plus vitamin C detoxifies the liver.
