Vitamin PABA ...
...vitamin
"PABA" or Para-aminobenzoic Acid
The full name of this water soluble vitamin is para-aminobenzoic acid.
This occurs as a component of folic acid, although it is usually referred to as a
separate B complex vitamin.
PABA is synthesized by intestinal bacteria and is stored in body tissues. It is believed that this vitamin also stimulates
intestinal bacteria to help form folic acid, which then stimulates the production and
utilisation of vitamin B5.
Externally PABA is used as a sunscreen in some suntan lotions.
This vitamin can be found in food sources such as brewers yeast, molasses,
eggs, wheatgerm, liver and wholegrains.
There are no specific symptoms associated with a deficiency in PABA, although it
may be involved in nervous tension or digestive disorders.
The important co-nutrients include (as before) zinc, vitamin C, manganse, plus
folic acid and other B complex vitamins.
PABA is required skin and hair health and a co-enzyme in the metabolism of proteins
and the production of blood cells.
The requirements of this vitamin are increased if you drink alcohol.
However, if you take extremely large supplemental doses of this vitamin, it can
increase the activity of oestrogen and may increase the side effects of drugs such as the
Pill.
PABA should not be taken when sulphonamide drugs have been prescribed as it may
counteract their therapeutic effects
But, all B complex vitamins should be taken together, to avoide deficiency symptoms
occuring.
